Hazardous material training is the number one way to prevent and reduce hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incidents caused by human error. All HAZMAT employees are required to follow the statute (49 U.S.C. 5101, et seq.) pertaining to the transportation of hazardous material within the United States. This is a Federal hazardous material transportation law.

This ruling applies to ANY employee of a company that oversees hazardous materials.

What are the training requirements?

Each HAZMAT employer must train and evaluate their HAZMAT employees, certify their training, and develop and retain current training records. HAZMAT training must include, or be:

  • General awareness and familiarization.
  • Safety instructions.
  • Job/Function-Specific.
  • In-depth security training (if a security plan is required).
  • Driver training (for each HAZMAT employee who will operate a motor vehicle).

What is the frequency of training?

Initial training must be complete within 90 days of employment for new HAZMAT employees or employees who change job functions. Recurrent training is required once every three years. Please note that the three-year period begins on the actual training date.
